- Abstract
- The protective effect of aminophylline, AP-5 avizafone, CGS 18164A, diazepam, ketamine, lithium, (-)-MK-801, (+)-MK-801, and oxitremorine against soman (pinacolyl methylphosphonofluoridate) neurotoxicity and cardiotoxicity was evaluated in mature Sprague-Dawley (S-D) rats using histologic examination. The objective of the histopathologic examination was to determine the incidence and severity of soman-induced CNS and myocardial lesions in rats exposed to a single dose of soman 10 min after the administration of varying doses of these protective compounds. The rats were killed 72 h later. In separate experiments, the neurotoxic and cardiotoxic effects of kainic acid (12 and 24 mg/kg) and soman (60 and 40 mg/kg) were studied in S-D rats exposed to single doses of thees excitotoxins.
