Abstract
The increased capabilities and availability of nonlinear finite element codes allows their use for design against nonlinear structural collapse of submarine pressure hulls. Analysis can be undertaken on complete structural compartments including the effects of out-of-cicularity, secondary structure and residual stresses. As a Step towards adopting nonlinear finite element calculations in the design process, a joint Canada/Netherlands Navy project was undertaken to verify calculations of the overall collapse mode of pressure hull failure. A series of machined pressure hull models with enforced out-of-circularities and attached secondary deck structure were constructed,
