- Abstract
- The Defence Research Establishment Pacific (DREP) has investigated the effect of Aluminum-Lithium 8090-T8771 and 2090-T8E41 plate orientation on constant amplitude fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR). The report describes a follow-on study of the broken compact specimens. Metallographic observations and texture analysis were first carried out on selected samples in order to obtain background information on the alloys. The fracture surfaces of the DREP specimens were then inspected scanning electron microscopy to identify mechanisms of fatigue crack growth that would aid in the understanding of the constant amplitude FCGR data. Fracture features at known crack lengths were correlated with specific rates of fatigue crack growth.
