Abstract
Describes the VAST Visualizer, a 3D interactive graphics program produced at the Defence Research Establishment Atlantic for displaying static and dynamic finite element analysis results and finite element models. The VAST Visualizer is capable of directly displaying results produced by VAST or PATRAN, and is easily adapted to display results from any other finite element software. The VAST Visualizer may also be used as a powerful preprocessor for the verification of finite element models. The strength of the VAST Visualizer lies in its ability to display quickly animated dynamic results while still maintaining a high level of user control over viewing. This animation can then be coupled with coloured fringe patterns, thus adding another dimension of visualization for the user. The user may also interactively modify colours, lighting, and material properties to produce high quality solid or shaded models. All program control is through the use of pull-down menus, buttons, and sliders within a windowing environment which is based on the GL language produced by Silicon Graphics. The end result is an easy to use visualization tool that is quick, flexible, and a high standard of quality.
