Abstract
Methods have been developed to aid in the prediction of buckling failure in ring stiffened shells such as submarine structures. The methods were based on the general purpose finite element program VAST and involved the creation of pre- and post-processing programs to aid the user in both generation of the input data and presentation of the results. Modifications were also made to the program VAST itself, to enhance its capabilities with respect to the buckling analysis of submarine-like structures. An important feature is the ability to use axisymmetric finite element models to predict nonaxisymmetric response by using a Fourier Series approach. A number of numerical studies were undertaken to validate the finite element procedures and to address points of particular concern in the analysis of submarine structures.
