Abstract
The Chief of Reserves requested DSEA to carry out a study on the reserves. The purpose of the study was to focus on the characteristics, attitudes and values of reservists, and on issues related to retention and the internal organization of the reserves. A survey instrument was developed and adminstered to a representative sample of reservists in the spring of 1986. This project report is the first of two which discusses the data collected during this phase of the study. The focus of this report is on the social and reserve background of the reservists and their availability for reservist activities. Differences in these characteristics of the reservists by rank, years of service, element, size of community, employment status and occupation are explored.
