Abstract
Defence Research Establishment Atlantic is investigating the suitability of the ship structural analysis code. MAESTRO (Method for Analysis, Evaluation and STRuctural Optimization) for providing global structural response information for use in assessment of strength and endurance of damaged and intact ship structure. This technical memorandum describes a first assessment of MAESTRO through the analysis of a simple representative ship model. In addition to elastic strength the results from MAESTRO are used in the context of a reliability evaluation of ultimate strength using the reliability code CALREL. MAESTRO analysis of an existing CPF model which will be used in a DREA pilot project project to evaluate residual strength of damage structure is also discussed. Supplementary codes to facilitate static wave balance were used and will be incorporated into the MAESTRO code in future. It is concluded that MAESTRO is suitable as one of the main tools to be used in the proposed Improved Ship Structural Maintenance Management project which will address maintenance decisions through rational assessment of the ship's structural capability.
