Abstract
Describes a real-time model for naval situation assessment in terms of knowledge-based systems and case-based reasoning systems. The paper also describes the subfunctions of naval situation assessment which will be simulated using these technologies. In order to make the knowledge-based system function in real time, design-to-time and anytime approaches have been studied and some indication of the former is given on rule sets of the knowledge bases. The paper describes the real-time inputs and outputs of the situation assessment process. A uniprocessor architecture has been chosen for the implementation since the scheduling and mapping problems will be less complicated than in the multiprocessor case. An analysis is given of the bounded response times that a uniprocessor system executing these implementations will have to satisfy in order to produce response times within the rapid constraints of anti-warfare.
