Abstract
Several improvements to program VAST, HVAST and VASFEM were made. A geometric stiffness matrix was derived for the 4-noded bilinear degenerated shell element. The efficiency of UNITE was improved by adopting a sounding box concept to establish which substructures would be involved in node equivalencing. UNITE was also extended to multi-level substructuring. The existing method of implementing multi-point constraint equations in VAST based on work of Abel and Shephard was improved and an alternate method based on penalty functions was implementd. A check for beam orientation node being collinear with the beam centreline was added to VASTG. Major restructuring work on the HVAST and VASFEM program suites was also undertaken.
