Abstract
For many years Defence Research Establishment Atlantic has been using a standard "data" file for storing acoustic data. While the benefits of using this have been many-fold, particularly in the easy exchange of data and programs among diverse groups, the ability of data collection systems as well as the requirements of some researchers have outgrown this original standard. The paper describes a new data file format which attempts to address, in a coherent manner, not only the shortcomings of the current standard but also the desire to be able to easily make future enhancements to the file format.
