- Abstract
- Probable future applications of small beacons and transponders are discussed, together with the limitations which might be imposed on their use in urban areas because of the problems associated with the propagation characteristics of RF signals in such an environment. Techniques which have been employed to locate various forms of transponders at long, medium, and short ranges are described, and the lack of information concerning suitably small antennas is emphasized. Some small transponder units which have already been developed, and others which have been proposed, are listed. The installation of transponders and antennas in vehicles, where the metallic body shell may create special difficulties, is discussed briefly.
