THE ANOMALOUS BLUE SHIFT OF LASER LIGHT SCATTERED BY A PLASMA

Abstract
An intense laser beam focused in a plasma is shown to generate a "smoke ring" of electrons at the focal spot. If the energy in the laser pulse exceeds a certain threshold, then the electrons on the axis of the smoke ring move towards the laser. This average electron motion results in an overall blue shift of the spectrum of incoherently scattered laser light.
