GENERAL FORMULAE FOR THE SUMMATION OF THE POWERS OF THE FIRST n NATURAL NUMBERS

Abstract
It is shown that, if P(n) is the sum of the first n natural numbers and R(n) is the sum of their squares, then the sum of their q'th powers can be expressed either as a polynomial in P(n), or as R(n) times a polynomial in P(n), depending respectively on whether q is odd or even. The coefficients of the polynomials are easily evaluated from equations derived in the proof.
