DRAG ON CYLINDERS IN A 20 TO 25 MILLISECOND BLAST WAVE

Abstract
Measurements of aerodynamic drag were made on free flight circular cylinders, varying in diameter from 3 to 12 inches, when subjected to the blast wave from a 1000 lb high explosive air burst. The peak incident overpressures and positive pressure durations were in the range of 13-20 psi and 20-25 milliseconds respectively in a series of twelve tests. Curves of impulse versus time indicate that the predominant fraction of the drag loading is observed during the early phases of the diffraction of the blast wave around the cylinder.
