CHARACTERISTICS OF A CS2/O2 CHEMICAL LASER WITH FLOW TRANSVERSE TO THE OPTICAL AXIS

Abstract
A continuous wave chemical laser which had its optical axis transverse to the direction of gas flow was constructed. Measurements were made of the laser output spectra and power as the distance was varied from the point of mixing of the reagents CS2 and O/O2/He. An output power level of one watt in a 15 centimeter length was easily obtainable with improvement resulting from beam folding. The spectroscopic data enabled measurements of the initial vibrational distribution of the chemical pumping step O + CS yields CO + S to be made in addition to the decay of the vibrational population inversion as the reacting gases were swept forward into the laser cavity.
