THE ULTRAVIOLET FLASH PHOTOLYSIS OF OZONE AND THE REACTION OF O(super 1D) with H2O

Abstract
The decomposition of gas mixtures containing ozone has been studied following a short duration ultraviolet light pulse. From an analysis of the O3 decomposition curves for O3:N2 and O3:N2:H2O mixtures, it is shown that the relative rate of O(Super 1D) H2O and N2 is k(sub H2O)/k(sub N2) = 3.5 ~ 1.5. It is also shown that less than 6% of the O2, formed directly by photolysis, is in the (Super 1 b Super + sub g) state. The water catalysed decomposition of ozone is also discussed.
