Abstract
The thermodynamic behaviour of target materials, irradiated by laser beams, has been mathematically modelled, Spherical and cylindrical domains, simulating core and surface irradiation, were examined. The thermodynamic phase changes have been considered, so that any latent heats of fusion and vaporisation are included in the modelling. The model has been used to predict the damage volumes for aluminum, beryllium, iron and uranium target irradiated by a single high energy pulse.
