Abstract
Direct detection, heterodyning and up-conversion are briefly reviewed. Direct detection and heterodyning are compared as detection techniques for TEA-CO2 lasers. The performance of photodiodes and photoconductors as detectors and mixers is analysed. It is shown that for 100 ns pulses, heterodyning has a 45 dB gain over direct detection.
