Abstract
Laboratory observations of the O2 (super 1 Delta sub g) and O2 (super 1b+ sub g) emissions showed that the first of these states is produced directly by photolysis of ozone at 2537A and that the second comes from the energy transfer between O (super 1D) and O2 (super 3b- sub g). Although it is possible to produce O2 (super 1b+ sub g) at wavelengths shorter than 2650A, experiment showed that the primary photochemical reaction cannot produce this state with an efficiency of more than 3%. The behavior of the singlet state emissions with addition of N2 and O2 leads to the relative rates of removal of O (super 1D) by N2, O2, and O3. The coefficients are in the ratio 0.7/1/10.
