Abstract
The theoretical background and computer implementation issues related to the enhancement of the direct frequency response and damping analysis capabilities in the VAST finite element program are described in this report. The computer programs developed in the previous contract for development of direct frequency response analysis were first reviewed and improved. Several new capabilities were subsequently implemented. These capabilities included an out-of-core complex linear algebraic equation solver, an option for computing strain energy ratios and system loss factors using a strain energy based approach, and an improved load modelling procedure. Numerical examples are presented to verify the newly developed capabilities. The enhancements of the VASTG and VASGEN/VASUSE programs are also described.
