Abstract
The feasibility of using a television camera, sensitive in the near infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, to give depth of field perception and horizon detection in a whiteout was investigated at Yellowknife, N.W.T. in February 1973. This approach is based on the fact that the reflectivity of snow decreases considerably in this region of the spectrum from the values in the visible region. This decrease may be sufficient to disturb the balance of conditions required to sustain a whiteout.
