Abstract
An evaluation of ensolite pads (closed cell foam) and Kampamat pads (open cell foam) for possible replacements of the pneumatic (air) mattress as part of the Arctic sleeping bag ensemble was made in the laboratory and also in the field during two Exercise New Viking serials. It was found that although both were warmer than the air mattress only the Kampamat, with a nylon cover, was accepted by the troops. It is suggested that this type of ensemble (Kampamat in a nylon cover) should be considered as a replacement for the air mattress.
