VARIABLE ATTENUATOR FOR TEA CO2 LASERS

Abstract
An attenuator consisting of a gas cell containing a suitable absorbing gas such as propylene or propane provides smooth and easy control of the intensity of TEA CO2 laser beams over a range of 40 dB. Attenuation of megawatt pulses may be obtained free of temporal or spatial distortions and independent of the polarization of the laser beam. On montre que l'intensit d'un faisceau laser CO2 TEA peut tre contrle aisment et de fa on continue sur une gamme de 40 dB, en l'attnuant dans une cellule contenant un gaz absorbant appropri tel le propylne ou le propane. L'attnuation d'impulsions allant jusqu'au mgawatt n'a rvl aucune distorison spatio-temporelle, indpendamment de la polarisation du faisceau laser.
