Abstract
The broadening recommended is in the "research" to support the broader "defence". As mentioned, defence research has always engaged the physical sciences. The thesis is that it needs to exploit the social sciences as well. Social sciences should be very broadly defined. They would include many of the subjects found in the calendar of the Faculties of Arts and Science of a modern university, with the exception of those considered to be physical or laboratory sciences, and not including languages or other subjects sometimes given the title of "letters". Includes economics, political science, history, sociology, and others which appear to have definite contributions to make to defence studies, also includes certain kinds of law, geography, psychology, anthropology, criminology, and others which may have some contribution to make to defence studies.
