Abstract
A spectroscopic method to determine the induced-emission cross-section for the 3P(O) tends to 3F2 and 3P(O) tends to 3H6 transitions of the Pr3+ ions in an aprotic solvent system consisting of a 4: mixture of SeOCl2 and SnCl4 has been used. The values obtained were 4.3 x 10 to the 19th power sq cm and 2.0 x 10 to the 19th power sq cm, respectively. The former value is five times as large as the value of 0.85 x 10 to the 19th power sq cm for the low-threshold laser transition of the Nd3+ ion in the same solvent system, so that the system warrants further study as a laser material.
