Abstract
The transponder described in the paper is designed to fulfil two basic functions: a) it will serve as a test-bed for microwave units which represent advances in technology over units which have already been flight-proven; and b) it will be used to perform a number of experiments to determine the feasibility of establishing economical, reliable communications links using small earth terminals. The transponder incorporates a number of features which permit advanced-technology units to fail without jeopardizing the communications experiments. A number of features are also included in the design to enable experiments to be undertaken with different power gains and output power levels. These and other transponder design features are described.
