EFFECT OF SHIELDING ON BLAST LOADING OF CIRCULAR CYLINDERS

Abstract
Two cylindrical cantilever beams, each 1 1/2 inches in diameter, were mounted in the DRES blast simulator, one behind the other on a line along the length of the simulator. The beams were exposed to a blast wave of 20 psi peak incident overpressure and 25 milliseconds positive duration. The ratio of peak strain of the rear to the front cylinder increased from 0.4 to 0.8 as the distance between the beams was increased from 2 to 8 beam diameters. The strain ratio increased more gradually as the distance between the beams increased beyond 8 diameters.
