Abstract
The report summarizes the operational aspects and includes example results of a seabed mapping survey conducted by Canadian Seabed Research Ltd. of Proter's Lake, Nova Scotia for Defence Research Establishment Atlantic, on CFAV Quest sea-trail Q225, during July 4 - 13th 1995. The objectives of the survey on a site by site bases were as follows: Station 1, Familiarize CFAV Quest crew with survey procedures. Station 2, Mapping of false targets (surficial features) and resolution of objects greater than 0.3 metres in diameter. Station 3, Mapping the lateral extent and depth of LaHave Clay overlying glacial till or bedrock ridges, or shipwrecks. Station 5, Mapping seabed features and thickness of the Quaternary sediment sequence. The survey equipment supplied to achieve the above objectives included: a Klein 595 sidescan sonar systeem, sidescan winches, a towfish depressor, an EG&G 230 surface tow boomer systerm, the CFAV Quest Simrad EA 500 echo sounder system, an integrated navigation system, including: Magnavox 4200D DGPS receivers, the Starfix II system, Hypack survey navigation software and ground truthing equipment including: gravity corers, a grab sampler and an underwater video.
