Abstract
Three types of propellant were studied by molecular probe to evaluate the applicability of the technique to aging studies. The probe was efficient in characterizing the behaviour of a given propellant under a given set of conditions, and in indicating the influence of the solid phase on the stability of the binder. Thus the post-curing effect in a standard propellant was analysed in detail. A delta Ha of 66.1 kJ/mole was determined for this first-order reaction. In a second example, Fe2O3 was shown to decrease the post-curing effect leading to a very thermally stable propellant. Finally, the absence of aluminum was shown to decrease the hydrolytic stability of the binder.
