Abstract
An experimental design of a system for deploying telemetry instrumentation beneath Arctic sea-ice by means of a free-fall penetrator is presented and some of its more difficult design areas are noted. Results of laboratory experiments leading to the selection of a nose shape for prototype full scale models tested in the Arctic and significant observations derived from the results are also discussed. Results obtained from the Arctic trials were disappointing in some respects but they show that the basic concept is feasible and indicate which areas in the original design require modification.
