Abstract
The quantum-mechanical theory of combined Doppler and foreign gas pressure broadening at the binary collision level is developed from the point of view of statistical mechanics. The problem is formulated in terms of the stationary state solution of a linearized kinetic equation. The equation takes into account the effects of photon recoil momentum, binary collision correlations and the finite duration of collisions.
