Abstract
Rising oil prices and insecurity of supply have focused attention on alternative energy sources. While some of these alternative energy sources already or are shortly to make meaningful contributions to world energy production, most of them, e.g., biomass, have not been seriously considered to date. Biomass, i.e. wood, garbage, animal waste, and other bio-sources such as algae, is receiving increasing attention as an alternative source of energy.
