Abstract
Laboratory simulation of absorption-induced phenomena distorting long duration (>0.1 s), intense, 10.6m laser pulses propagating horizontally is described. The experimental approach, the measurement techniques, the data acquistion and recording, and the basic method of data analysis are discussed at length. Preliminary results are reported that confirm a number of theoretical predictions concerning the scales and the configuration of the distorted irradiance patterns. Experimental evidence of a particular form of focusing produced by the absorption-induced free convection currents is shown.
