Abstract
The superfluorescence equation corresponding to a two-level system is derived for three different lineshapes: the Gaussian, the Lorentzian and the flat-top profile. The results of the calculations reveal the existence of a sharp transition zone between the normal fluorescence and the superfluorescence regimes. A superfluorescence threshold is defined and its value is compared to that of the oscillation threshold relative to various types of possible optical feedback such as reflection due to index gradients or backscattering from small spheres and from the edges of an iris.
