Abstract
A preliminary study of factors which influence the defence postures of those countries which have significant military forces (approx- imately 100 countries). Most of the emphasis in the study has been placed upon the relationship of per-capita GNP to the ratios of naval and air forces to land forces. Eight additional factors are listed as having some influence upon force posture. The importance of examining the development of defence postures in emerging nations is emphasized.
