Abstract
In this study theoretical background of battery heating and cooling was reviewed and confirmatory experiments were carried out. It was found that when nickel/ca dmium batteries are charged at low rates cooling takes place but the reverse is true at high rates. Rapid heating takes place during high rate discharges and al so during overcharge if the separator materials permit oxygen to reach the negat ive plate. Magnitudes involved are illustrated by typical examples.
