Abstract
A thin-layer chromatography procedure was developed at DREV to assess the safe storage life of single-base gun propellants in Canadian Forces (CF) ammunition depots. It is based on the appearance of a colored spot, under ultraviolet light, in the lower half of the chromatographic plate which is free from interfering spots. The test may prove more satisfactory than the presently used Abel Heat Test for routine surveillance of single-base propellants in CF ammunition depots and can identify propellants requiring further examination by the procedures of STANAG 4117.
