CALCULATIONS OF THE RESPONSE OF SILICON RADIATION DETECTORS USING THE COMPUTER CODE CYLTRAN

Abstract
The computer code CYLTRAN has been used to calculate the response of silicon radiation detectors to photons of energy 0.06 to 2.0 MeV. Calculations have been made for detectors ranging in thickness from 0.05 to 0.5 mm and results are presented for cut-off energies from 0.02 to 0.3 MeV. The results of these calculations predict that with the appropriate choice of detector thickness and operating conditions, including some novel methods of energy compensation, a response can be obtained which is flat to within about 10% over the energy range 0.07 to 2.0 MeV.
