THE EVALUATION OF A 500 WATT THERMOELECTRIC POWER SOURCE, PP-6075 (XE-2)

Abstract
Two 500 watt thermoelectric power sources were evaluated by the Defence Research Establishment Ottawa from January 1977 to July 1977. A total of 393 operational hours were accumulated over a temperature range of -25C to +25C. Fuel consumption at maximum rated power was in the range of 1.6 to 1.8 kg/h which translates to an overall efficiency of 2.2 to 2.8%. Although for these units shortcomings were observed in the areas of reliability, maintainability and multifuel capability, the evaluation demonstrated the feasibility of using thermoelectric technology to power tactical military equipment.
