Abstract
Activation of the complement cascade by various strains of serogroup A and B. N. meningitidis was studied by a turbido-hemolytic assay. Several strains of N. meningitidis from either serogroup A or B caused consumption of complement by the classical pathway. The strains which caused complement activation as well as the extent of activation varied with different batches of complement. The (serogroup antigen) capsular polysaccharide did not cause consumption of complement via the classical pathway even in the presence of anticapsular antibody.
