Abstract
An attempt has been made to predict and compare the performance of optimized sleeping systems using combinations of synthetic battings, foams, and the standard down and feather mixture. A simple numerical model of a man in a sleeping bag was used to optimize the design of sleeping systems by calculating the distribution of different insulating materials which minimized the total heat loss, subject to the constraints of either a maximum total mass of insulating material or a maximum packed volume.
