SPLIT-STEP FOURIER-TRANSFORM ANALYSIS FOR LASER-PULSE PROPAGATION IN PARTICULATE MEDIA

Abstract
A new method of obtaining the mutual coherence function of a laser pulse propagating in a particulate medium is described. The treatment, which is based on the technique of the split-step Fourier transform, enables us to avoid the uncontrolled approximation often used to solve the parabolic differential equation of the mutual coherence function. Simple numerical algorithms in the form of algebraic recurrence relations are derived for the study of the phenomenon of pulse broadening induced by multiple scattering.
