Abstract
The flow of typographical work between an author and a typing service can be modelled as a queueing network. A model is presented which may be applicable to the Word Processing Unit of the Operational Research and Analysis Establishment (ORAE). Formulae are given to estimate resource utilization, job waiting time, job service time, work throughput, and total time to complete a job. These formulae are based on operational data which is easy to collect. The information can be used to identify sources of delay, system bottlenecks and over utilized resources. Results from general queueing theory are suggested which might be used to improve system performance.
