AN ALGORITHM FOR FREQUENCY-DOMAIN BEAMFORMING OF A DUAL LINE ARRAY

Abstract
Left-right ambiguity in towed line array measurements of ambient noise directionality may be prevented by replacing the point sensors with directional elements. Transverse hydrophone pairs from a dual line array can be formed into left- and right- looking cardioid beams for this purpose. Cardioid formation is typically performed in the time domain using analog circuits. The report proposes an alternative approach which operates in the frequency domain. Essentially it is a method of cross-spectral beamforming modified to accomodate cardioid formation. It is readily adaptable to channel gain variation as well as to hydrophone failure. As opposed to the time domain approach, it provides for the use of all functioning hydrophones even when in some pairs one element is lost.
