Abstract
As the primary medium for communicating the results of research and development work, reports serve many important purposes. They earn personal and laboratory recognition and credibility; they provide stock-in-trade for the exchange of R&D information within the western alliance, they form the good corporate memory needed to ensure that work done today retains its value for years to come; they provide a catalyst, both for authors and management, to assess the work and its importance; they stimulate communication, not only with workers in the same field, but sometimes with workers whose background is different enough to offer a new perspective.
