MODELLING OCEAN ACOUSTIC PROPAGATION WITH A WIDE-ANGLE PARABOLIC EQUATION METHOD

Abstract
The paper presents a comparison between long range propagation loss data and model predictions obtained using a new wide-angle parabolic equation. The wide-angle approximation provides a better representation of the Helmholtz equation, and the method retains the use of the split-step marching algorithm. Also, the new equation is less sensitive to the reference wavenumber. The comparison with the data indicates that the wide-angle model predictions are in very good agreement with the measurements, and provide a significant improvement over the predictions based on the standard parabolic equation.
