LABORATORY ANALOGUE MODELLING OF THE SCHUMANN RESONANCE SOURCE FIELD

Abstract
An oscillating vertical line current source was used in the laboratory to simulate the naturally occurring 8 Hz Schumann Resonance field due to lightning strokes. Vertical to horizontal magnetic field ratios (coast effect), and magnetotelluric ratios, for traverses over the Assistance Bay (N.W.T. Canada) laboratory model coastline for a vertical line current source are compared with those for an overhead uniform horizontal inducing field. The magnetotelluric ratios are found to be identical for the two sources for each of the E- and H-polarizations of the source field. E-polarization is taken to be the case of the horizontal field of the source roughly perpendicular to the general coastline, and H-polarization the case of the horizontal field of the source roughly parallel to the coastline.
