Abstract
Do recent shifts in public opinion require fundamental changes in Western Strategy? How important or critical is the protest against nuclear weapons as far as the future of NATO is concerned? Do Europeans believe that NATO is still essential? The paper attempts to answer these questions by an examination of aggregate public opinion data with a concurrent analysis of recent socio-political and economic developments within individual European countries.
