NUMERICAL APPROXIMATION OF SHIP HULLS

Abstract
In a wide variety of numerical calculations involving ship hulls it is necessary to have an accurate representation of the hull in terms of some set of basis functions. For the calculation of boundary layer growth along the hull, in which the curvature of the hull plays an important role, a well-behaved representation of the hull is crucial. Computer programs for calculating accurate representations of ship hulls in terms of B-splines are presented here. Data may be taken from offset tables or from offset diagrams (via a digitizing tablet). A two-dimensional parametric smoothing spline is used to fit the data.
