Abstract
The paper is a portrait of the Western Community showing the common ideals and institutions which bind its members together. The security arrangements of the Community are emphasized, showing major defence agreements and alliances. The western nations are linked by democratic ideals which form the foundation of political cooperation. Commercial relations among them are regulated by a variety of institutions which promote peaceful competition and cooperation. The domestic and commercial institutions are all designed to allow for the accommodation of competing demands, and this means that the development of unified security policies is a difficult task.
